Share files without uploading to the cloud
The traditional way is to upload a file to a server first and let the receiver download it from there. The file waits with a third party halfway and you use network traffic twice. With P2P (peer-to-peer) transfer the file goes straight from you to the receiver.
How does P2P work?
Browsers can connect directly to each other using WebRTC. Peerxfer uses a small signaling server to pass connection details between the two sides; once connected, the file flows directly and does not pass through the server. See How it works for details.
Privacy advantages
- The file is not stored with a cloud provider; you don’t have to wait for deletion or manage an account.
- The transfer is encrypted and also authenticated with the password you share.
- No sign-up is needed; your email address or account is not tied to the file.
Downsides and honest notes
- Both sides must be online at the same time; there is no later download.
- A direct connection can fail on some restrictive networks.
- P2P does not protect you from malicious content: share only with people you trust and open received files at your own risk.
