Frequently asked questions
Is Peerxfer really free?
Yes, 100% free. No sign-up, account or credit card is needed. Ads may be shown on the page to keep the site running.
Is there a file size limit?
Peerxfer itself has no size limit. In practice the limit is the receiver’s free disk space and both sides’ internet speed. For files of 10 GB and more, Peerxfer automatically uses part-by-part saving on the receiving side.
Are my files stored on a server?
No. File bytes do not pass through the Peerxfer server; they flow directly between the two browsers. The server only relays small signaling messages so the two sides can find each other.
Is the transfer secure?
The transfer is encrypted with WebRTC/DTLS and additionally authenticated with your password. The password is never sent to the server. Use the generated 10-character password and share the link and the password through separate channels.
What if the receiver enters the wrong password or I forget it?
With a wrong password the receiver cannot connect. After too many wrong attempts on one room, the session is closed for security and you need to create a new link.
Which browsers work?
Up-to-date Chrome or Edge is recommended for sending and receiving. On desktop Chrome/Edge the file is written straight to the place you choose. On phones and other browsers the file is first received inside the browser and then saved to Downloads with “Save file”; folders arrive as a single ZIP.
Typing the link is a pain; is there a shorter way?
Yes. When you create a share link, a 6-digit short code appears too. The receiver opens peerxfer.com and types the code and the password in the “Receive file” tab. On a phone you can also scan the QR code. On Android, add the site to your home screen and you can send straight from the gallery with “Share → Peerxfer”.
Can I use it on a phone?
Yes. Open the link or QR code on the phone, enter the password and tap “Download”. When the transfer finishes, a “Save file” button puts the file in your phone’s Downloads folder; folders are saved as a ZIP. The phone needs free space equal to the file size. Peerxfer tries to keep the screen awake during the transfer.
What happens if the sender closes the tab?
The transfer stops. The sender’s tab must stay open. For files over 10 GB the receiver can resume where it left off once the sender reopens the same link.
If the connection drops, does the file start over?
No. If the network breaks, both sides reconnect automatically for up to 10 minutes and continue from the last verified point.
Can I send several files or a folder at once?
Yes. You can select multiple files or one folder; subfolders are preserved. Empty folders are not sent. When a transfer ends, “Start a new transfer” gives you a fresh link and password for the next file.
How long does a link stay valid?
If nobody has connected yet, the room is deleted after at most 4 hours. When the sender closes the tab the link stops working.
Why does the connection fail on some networks?
A direct connection depends on what the networks allow. Very strict firewalls or some corporate networks can block it. Trying another network, such as mobile data, usually solves it.
Can I send text or a link instead of a file?
Yes. On the home page tap “✎ Send text” and type a note, an address or a short text (up to 50,000 characters). It travels over the same encrypted direct connection as files; the receiver sees it right away and can copy it with one tap. If it is a single web address, an “Open the link” button appears too.
Can I ask someone to send me a file?
Yes. In the “Receive file” tab, tap “📥 Create a “send me a file” link” and give the link to the person who has the file. When they open it and choose the file, the transfer starts automatically; the password travels hidden inside the link and never reaches the server. Keep your page open meanwhile.
What is the verification code shown at the end?
When a transfer finishes, both sides see a short code like “7F3A-91C2”. Compare it by phone or message: if it matches, the file arrived complete and nobody changed it along the way. If it doesn’t match, don’t open the file and send it again.
What does the receiver see before downloading?
The file name and size, the sender’s optional note and, for photos and videos, a small preview. The note and preview also go over the direct connection, only to a receiver who entered the correct password.
Can I send to a device next to me without sharing a link?
Yes. Open peerxfer.com on both devices and tap “Become visible” in the “Nearby devices” section below. Devices on the same Wi-Fi see each other. Pick your file and tap the other device; the same 4-letter pairing code appears on both screens. Once the other side accepts, the transfer starts on its own. The password is created on the two devices and never reaches the server. The feature stays off unless you turn it on.
Can I send the same file to several people?
Yes. Tick “Send to several people” before creating the link. Several people can then connect with the same link, short code and password. Receivers get it one after another: anyone waiting sees “You’re in line”, and their transfer starts automatically when it’s their turn. You can see how many people have received it, and the link stays open until you close the page.
